This Month’s Letter: Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act

The Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act is forthcoming legislation from Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD). The act seeks to improve the ability of the United States to work proactively to prevent genocide and mass atrocities by institutionalizing and strengthening existing efforts.  It does this by:

Authorizing the Atrocities Prevention Board; Authorizing the Complex Crises Fund; Training all Foreign Service officers in recognizing early warning signs of emerging atrocities or genocide; Providing training to prevent or respond to these early warning signs. In essence, this act makes atrocities prevention the official policy of the United States.
[Adapted from The Peace Alliance and Friends Committee on National Legislation]

Letter to Sen. Gillibrand: Thank you for cosponsoring the Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act.

Letter to Sen. Schumer: Please support the forthcoming Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act, sponsored by Sen. Ben Cardin.  By addressing conflicts before they erupt into widespread violence, this legislation could help save prevent suffering and save lives.
