 Dear GVCP Member:

The next regular GVCP Meeting is Sunday, July 16th, 1:00 PM (Lunch), 1:30 PM (Meeting) at Mae’s (formerly Omega) Restaurant, 4182 Lakeville Road Geneseo. [Please note that we are meeting again in the restaurant at which GVCP has met for more than ten years. We’re happy to be back at “our” meeting place.]

Save the date: International Day of Peace Thursday, September 21st, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.  We will have a ceremony that will begin at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 23 Main Street, Geneseo.  We will celebrate the 45th anniversary of the founding of Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace with cooperative games and music.  After the events at the church, we will walk to the SUNY Geneseo campus, where we will join with our sister group, Geneseo Peace Action, and participate in their event.  Check this webpage to see our event posted on the map: <http://internationaldayofpeace.org>

This Month’s Letters:  On September 14th, 2001 Rep. Barbara Lee cast the lone vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF).  Bodies were still being removed from the World Trade Center, the American public was wild for revenge, and no other representative had the courage to vote No.  This is the bill that authorized the President to use force against nations, groups, or people involved in the 9/11 attacks.  The AUMF has been used to justify at least 37 different military actions since 2001.  As Rep. Lee stated, “Any administration can rely on this blank check to wage endless war.”

In late June 2017, in a surprise turn of events, the House Appropriations Committee approved Rep. Lee’s amendment to the annual Defense Appropriations Bill to repeal the authorization.  Of course, this is just the first step in a long process, but it’s a major step in the right direction, and it has bipartisan support in the House of Representatives.

Please write to your representative, telling her/him that you support Rep. Lee’s amendment.  Postal mailing address is U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, DC, 20515.  Check your representative’s website for e-mail address.  Also, please call Rep. Lee’s office  [(202) 225-2661] to thank her for her courage and tenacity in persisting with her efforts to support peace rather than war.

Peace,
