Save the date! Wednesday, August 5th, 7:30 PM. Annual GVCP Hiroshima/Nagasaki Candlelight Vigil Avon traffic circle, Routes 5 & 20, Avon. This yearly event‹our 41st year‹is a very powerful, moving public statement of our dedication to peace and nuclear disarmament. This year is the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Please join us, and bring a friend! Note: Before the vigil, at 6:00 PM, some GVCP members will gather at Tom Wahl¹s restaurant, 283 East Main St. (Routes 5 & 20) in Avon for a snack. All welcome! This Month¹s Letters: Say YES to a diplomatic agreement with Iran! The peace agreement reached with Iran is the most important diplomatic accomplishment of this century. It demonstrates that intelligence, patience, creativity, and a commitment to conflict resolution can prevent war. Peace activists have been saying this for years, and we have been heard. We don¹t have to go to war with Iran. Diplomacy works! We¹ve achieved this important victory for peace, but now we have to maintain it. Hawks in the Congress are preparing legislation to destroy the agreement. They may have enough votes to pass the legislation. However, President Obama has said he will veto such legislation. The real struggle may be to keep Congress from overriding the veto. WRITE to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand telling them that you want peace, not war, with Iran. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand & Sen. Charles Schumer, U.S. Senate Washington DC 20510. The Capitol Switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. The official web pages of Sen. Gillibrand & Sen. Schumer have ³contact me² links. They¹re user-friendly. Contact your Representative as well. U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515. Go to their web page to write using e-mail. Call to let them (literally) hear your voice. We can achieve peace with Iran, but we¹ll have to work for it!
