(June 2014) Thomas Jefferson and other American revolutionary leaders believed that the main purpose of government was increasing the happiness of its citizens (Google: Truthout Happiness). The state of Vermont, following in the footsteps of the country of Bhutan, believes public policy should increase ‘Gross National Happiness,’ an index that measures people¹s happiness. War, hurricanes, floods and illness all increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP), because they increase economic activity. If happiness is what we want, maybe that is what we should measure.
