This Month’s Letter: President Obama: We Support a No First Use Policy on Nuclear Weapons. President Obama is considering a number of options that will make a lasting impact on U.S. foreign policy. Under consideration is implementing a No First Use policy for nuclear weapons: committing the U.S. to never being the first country to use nuclear weapons in a conflict.
A No First Use policy on nuclear weapons is essential to our long-term security and to nuclear abolition. Nuclear weapons are simply too dangerous to be used, and this policy would promote U.S. leadership in the cause of reducing nuclear stockpiles worldwide, and could set a new standard for other nuclear states.
Nuclear weapons are one of the leading threats to international peace and security. In fact, an all-out war using nuclear weapons could bring about the end of our species on planet earth. Nuclear weapons cannot address terrorism, or climate change, which are true threats to our security. The use of nuclear weapons against the civilian populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is among the most devastating consequences of militarism in world history.
Let President Obama know that you support a no first use policy on nuclear weapons; that our U.S. foreign policy should promote peace, not militarism; and that U.S. foreign policy and security in this world require strong leadership for nuclear abolition.
