? This Month’s Letter: Tell Pres. Obama to stop giving weapons of war to local police! Under the Department of Defense’s 1033 Program, the Department of Defense has distributed an astonishing array of military equipment to state and local police agencies. These range from machine guns and bazookas to armored personnel carriers and helicopters. In 2014, people across the country were shocked when police in combat gear used military vehicles and weapons to violently confront thousands of protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. President Obama responded to the demands of the public by excluding the most lethal military weapons from the 1033 Program. These banned weapons included grenade launchers, tracked armored vehicles, armed aircraft, bayonets, and .50 caliber guns and ammunition.
Unfortunately, President Obama has announced that he would reconsider the 1033 Program ban. We must show President Obama that more people want to maintain the ban on police militarization than want to lift it.
When police departments are armed with military-grade weapons and trained to use military tactics, they are more likely to treat the people they are meant to serve as enemy combatants.
Tell President Obama that local police departments don’t need military grade weapons. Maintain the present ban, and, better yet, end the 1033 Program entirely. [Adapted from a letter from Nicole Regalado at CREDO Action.]
