This petition is important if you are concerned about immigrant rights. Throughout the United States, local police authorities have a knee-jerk response to call federal agencies if they think someone they have stopped might be an undocumented immigrant. There is no need or requirement for this to happen.
On March 23rd, a family was stopped for a traffic violation and the Geneseo police officers immediately called the Border Patrol. Suddenly, what has been happening all across the nation happened here, in Geneseo, before our eyes. This should not be allowed to happen again.
Dr. Tony Macula has created a MoveOn petition calling for the Livingston County Sheriff’s office, and all county police departments, to prohibit calls to federal agencies for people who commit routine traffic offenses and other minor offenses.
