MEMBERSHIP NOTICE for JANUARY 27
No NUKES! Celebrating 3 years of the Nuclear Ban Treaty!
Rally to abolish Nuclear Weapons.
January 27, 2024, Saturday, 12 noon-1 pm
Geneseo, at the corner of Main Street and South Street.
The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force on January 22, 2021. This Treaty established a categorical ban on nuclear weapons under international law. Events around the globe and across the United States honour and celebrate this anniversary. Thanks to the steadfast witness and advocacy of the hibakusha (survivors) of the atom bombs dropped by the US on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a movement led by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) began. This campaign led the UN to negotiate the TPNW.
As of January 15th, 2024, the number of states parties reached 70, when Sao Tome and Principe, an African island nation near the equator, submitted ratification documents to the United Nations. Close to half of the world’s nations are either parties or signatories to the Treaty.
The 2nd annual meeting of States Parties in NYC in November 2023 resulted in an agreement to dismantle the false narrative of nuclear deterrence by addressing national security policies and political narratives. For too long policy makers have worked to convince us nuclear weapons are necessary to deter enemy attacks, spending billions upon billions of dollars on weapons systems that keep no one safe, ignore the humanitarian cost of the arms race, the growing potential for global devastation, the impact very the development of these weapons has upon the earth and her people.
The only path to true security is the elimination of nuclear weapons- and the best path to eliminating nuclear weapons is the Ban Treaty!
PLEASE, JOIN US!! It’s bound to be COLD. DRESS WARMLY.
**PLEASE NOTE: GVCP will hold an in-person meeting at 1:15 pm at Dr. Breen’s office, 138 Court Street, Geneseo** (the bottom of Court Street, near Route 63). Lunch will be served. All are welcome to join us!
